APRIL 17: Our second day on the Big Island... Tony and Jenni drove to Waipio. We drove through some very beautiful farm land, Paniolo Country, where the cowboys of Hawai'i live. We found a health food store with organic fruits and nuts, and then went to Kaimuela Deli. Jenni had chili rice and mac salad. We drove on to Honoka'a and past a forest before heading over to Tony's friend from high school, Chris and her kids. The girls are in a Hawaiian immersion school, and Alex, the oldest one, is showing us one of the chants she learned in school at right below. After that, we went outside to play!

In the yard, bananas, pineapples, mountain apples... Hawaiian peaches, kukui nuts and lots of Macadamia nut trees. We learned how to crack them with a hammer.

What a beautiful playground for kids, overlooking the Pacific Ocean!
We hung out in the yard, until it started to rain. Then we went inside, visited some more with Chris, chatting about life in West LA, old friends, etc. After our visit with Chris, we went to Tex's Drive Inn in Honoka'a. On Chris' suggestion, Tony got the Ahi Burger (it was good!) Jenni got chili rice and mac salad (2nd time that day). We bought some omiage and set off for Akaka Falls. By then it was raining hard. We walked briskly to the Akaka Falls. It was gorgeous, but our digital camera took that moment to die. So, no pix. After that, it was getting late, so we went to Hilo for awhile then drove back to Kona. We liked Hilo a lot. We went to a bookstore, but it was closed. I felt like I want to come back soon... and spend time in Hilo. So charming and lush. Reminded me a little of Cuba. We arrived back at Kona, went to L&L Drive In, but it wasn't what Tony was looking for, so we went to the Kona Bowl. Jenni got chili rice and mac salad (yes, 3rd time that day). We went back to Jackie's, stuffed and ready for bed. All in all, a really nice day [NEXT].
